Hey y’all! Welcome, welcome! I am so glad you’re here!
When you read a lot of YA contemporary and romance, it can become pretty hard to be impressed by novels. Admittedly, I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to books. But, I was pleasantly surprised when I read this ARC. Cupcake was so sweet and I really enjoyed Cookie O’Gorman’s writing style! But, before we get carried away, let’s get into it!
This was really cute! I thought at times it was a little cheesy, but I think that worked well in this story. I thought Cookie did a really good job balancing the confidence and insecurities that Ariel had with her weight. I thought the “fat-ist” was a weird choice to make when you could’ve just sad fat-phobic, but it kind of grew on me as just another “Ariel-ism.” I enjoyed Rhys and his overall personality. I enjoyed the fact that he wasn’t a “typical jock.” I did cringe at a few of the passages, like the full SJM bonding moment and the H*rry P*tter mentions. I think the concept of those was cute, it just didn’t come across that way.
While there were those few moments that were a little icky, I have to say that Ariel’s self confidence and her love for baking and being who she was truly shown through. I loved that no matter what Rhys was always honest with her and open. I enjoyed that even though they had their snafu that they talked it out. I loved that Ariel embraced her nickname and where it came from. I think that Cookie’s ability to allow Ariel to shine on her own and stand on her own two feet without Rhys was incredible. She has this talent for pulling you into the novel, making you never want to stop reading. It was clever and catchy. It fully sucks you in. This was my first novel by her and I can say it won’t be my last! Her writing really is stellar!
Overall, I thought it was a great story, I loved the characters, and I enjoyed the idea. I just think a couple things fell short for me. But it was a good, quick read! I think if you like sweet YA romcoms, this is absolutely a book you’ll enjoy! You should absolutely pick this up!
