Underrated Book Recs! YA Fantasy Addition

Hey y’all! Welcome, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here!

Today, I’m going to switch gears from reviews and do a bit of recommending of underrated books. A conversation with friends about the New York Times Bestseller list turned into a conversation about books that are so underrated or should’ve been ranked on the list. So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

1) Air Awakens by Elise Kova- This series changed my opinion on YA fantasy. I could not for the life of me find a way to stop reading these. I’m pretty sure I binged the whole series in four or five days. It follows a young librarian who finds out she has a long thought forgotten power. Will she learn to wield it or will she give it all up? If you like Avatar: The Last Airbender, this series is for you! GOODREADS

2) Vortex Chronicles by Elise Kova- I read this following reading Elise’s Air Awakens series and this just built on my love for Elise and her work. These were SO INCREDIBLY GOOD! Following the child of one of the main characters from Air Awakens as she tries to figure out her powers and how those powers can affect the future. These can be read without reading Air Awakens, but I encourage reading Air Awakens first for better context! A little blurb: A desperate princess, a magical traveler, and a watch that binds them together with the fate of a dying world. GOODREADS

3) The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson- I haven’t had a chance to read this yet, but this was recommended to me by a friend! Here’s a blurb: In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met. GOODREADS

4) Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series by Laini Taylor- Another recommendation from a friend, the premise of this series totally drew me in and I can’t wait to dig in! A blurb: Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war. GOODREADS

5) Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta- I found these as a recommendation after another series I finished, and it’s been sitting in the back of my mind ever since. It really sounds so good! A blurb: Finnikin of the Rock and his guardian, Sir Topher, have not been home to their beloved Lumatere for ten years. Not since the dark days when the royal family was murdered and the kingdom put under a terrible curse. But then Finnikin is summoned to meet Evanjalin, a young woman with an incredible claim: the heir to the throne of Lumatere, Prince Balthazar, is alive. GOODREADS

6) The Dark is Rising Series by Susan Cooper- On holiday in Cornwall, the three Drew children discover an ancient map in the attic of the house that they are staying in. They know immediately that it is special. It is even more than that — the key to finding a grail, a source of power to fight the forces of evil known as the Dark. And in searching for it themselves, the Drews put their very lives in peril. This is the first volume of Susan Cooper’s brilliant and absorbing fantasy sequence known as The Dark Is Rising. GOODREADS

7) Raybearer Series by Jordan Ifueko- This book stunningly sits on my shelf staring at me. I’ve been knee deep in ARC’s and haven’t gotten a chance to read it yet, but I have been dying too! A blurb: Nothing is more important than loyalty. But what if you’ve sworn to protect the one you were born to destroy? GOODREADS

8) Legendborn Series by Tracy Deonn- The first book in this series lives rent free in my mind. Absolutely rent free. I fell in love with this series and I continually recommend it! A Blurb: After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. GOODREADS

9) A Song of Wraiths and Ruin Series by Roseanne A. Brown- My love for Karina and Malik knows no bounds and I can not wait to find out what happens to them in the sequel, holy Toledo. I am OBSESSED! A blurb: For Malik, the Solstasia festival is a chance to escape his war-stricken home and start a new life with his sisters in the prosperous desert city of Ziran. But when a vengeful spirit abducts Malik’s younger sister, Nadia, as payment into the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal—kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia’s freedom. GOODREADS

10) Bring Me Their Hearts Series by Sara Wolf- I don’t think I could accurately ever sum up how obsessed with these books I am. They pull you in with a fantastic concept and the romance and the characters make you stay. A blurb: So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all. Winner takes the loser’s heart. Literally. GOODREADS

I’m sure there are so many more great series out there, but these have been some of my absolutely favorites or ones that have come highly recommended by friends. I’ve reread some of these a multitude of times and can not stop talking about them. They are all fantastic!

What is your favorite series? Let me know in the comments below! Until next time…
